Universal Robots, the market-leading collaborative robot brand, has made a few changes to its product line-up in 2025. As well as new additions to its flagship UR Series, the e-Series has had a shake-up. These changes may have left some asking 'What happened to the UR5e and UR10e?' Let's delve into it.

No, the UR5e and UR10e have not been discontinued.

In May 2025, Universal Robots announced, alongside the launch of the UR15 high-performance robot, that the brand’s staple models – the UR5e and UR10e – would be renamed to reflect their payload capacities.

At the time, Universal Robots’ Chief Product Officer Tero Tolonen explained:

“We’ve also updated our trusted e-Series, and to better reflect their capabilities, we’re introducing new names: UR7e and UR12e. Same versatility and trusted performance, but clearer names and more power where it counts.”

So, what changed?

  • The UR5e was renamed the UR7e, to reflect its new 7.5 kg payload capacity – made possible by a software update.

  • The UR10e was renamed the UR12e, to reflect its 12.5 kg payload capacity, which it has been capable of since an upgrade in 2021.

  • The robots are mechanically the same – they have just been renamed.

Why did Universal Robots rename the UR5e and UR10e?

  • The names “UR5e” and “UR10e” were misleading, as they suggested lower payload capabilities than the robots are actually capable of.

  • The new names “UR7e” and “UR12e” more accurately reflect the robots’ lifting capacities.

Are the UR7e/ UR12e models compatible with my existing setup?

Yes. All software, accessories, URCaps and application kits that work with the UR5e/ UR10e models are fully compatible with the renamed UR7e/ UR12e models respectively.

Which robot models are in the e-Series range?

As well as the UR7e and UR12e, the e-Series range also includes the UR3e and UR16e. These robots can be used for everything from simple pick-and-place tasks, to assembly, palletising, welding, sanding and more. They are tried and trusted robots from the leading collaborative robot brand, Universal Robots.

Which robot models are in the UR Series?

The UR Series range consists of the UR8 Long, UR15, UR18, UR20 and UR30. Universal Robots’ flagship UR Series began with the launch of the UR20. The UR Series is a range of high-performance robots for users requiring higher payloads, with advanced joint-architecture and certifications for demanding environments.

To conclude – the UR7e is just a rebranded UR5e. The UR12e, equally, is just a new name for the UR10e. There are no functional changes, beyond the increase of 2.5kg payload for each model. The e-Series continues to provide reliable, flexible automation for businesses of all sizes, whilst the new UR Series offers heavy duty payload capabilities – unlocking new applications with Universal Robots.
